Rufino Tamayo Museum of Pre-Hispanic Art

rufino tamayo museumThis is a private collection that the world renowned artist left to his home town for appreciation.

The building where the museum is located is a beautiful XVIII Century colonial home that was renovated to exhibit the collection. The rooms are decorated with beautiful colors that were chosen by the artist himself as he used the same colorful palette in his paintings.

There are over 1,000 pieces exhibited in the collection ranging from the early urban period of ancient Mesoamerica in 1300 B.C. to the time of the Spanish contact in the first quarter of the XVI Century.

It’s a fantastic collection, hand-picked by Tamayo during 20 some years of his life, and shows the immense appreciation he had for ancient cultures, inspiring him to introduce his own iconography to the world with his paintings.
