Basilica of the Virgin of Solitude

This is the church of the Patroness of Oaxaca, so it has been elevated to the rank of a Minor Basilica due to its immense devotion.

The building is one of the cities most elegant architectural works from the later part of the XVII century. It has a façade that is completely hand-carved in stone and has as a main dedication frame the image in relief of the Virgin in Solitude/Loneliness at the foot of the on the Golgotha where her son was crucified and with a panoramic of Jerusalem in the background.

The church was finished and inaugurated in 1689 and was aligned facing east and the rising sun everyday.

This is the church of most faith in the city and where most locals from outside the city come when in town to light a candle in honor of the Virgin as well as to ask for her guidance and protection in their daily lives.

The church inside has a beautiful image of the Virgin dressed in velvet clothes embroidered with gold and silver leaf and wears a crown of diamonds and rubies.

In the back of the church there is a small museum which displays objects that have been gifted to the Virgin in devotion to her by Oaxacan thru history.

In front of the church there is a small plaza called Socrates were locals meet to enjoy freshly made sherbets made from tropical fruits and flavors, including tequila & rose petals.
