Hierve el Agua

These natural water falls were calcified over time to leave us a spectacular natural phenomenea, located above the Mitla valley on a hilltop village called San Lorenzo Albarradas.

hierve el agua

It’s an amazing natural wonder but does require good walking conditions as it isn’t visible from the parking lot. There’s a need to walk down to be able to see the falls, and once there we can see natural springs that have formed little canals on the rock surface, some which feed water into large natural rock pools where swimming is possible, surrounded by a unique landscape, with the sensation of "floating on top of the world".

There are evidences that ancient Zapotecs channeled water from the springs thru these little canals as irrigation all the way down to the valley floor.

For more interested walkers there are also trails that reach down to the falls base and around it all and back.

It’s an ideal place to have a family picnic, great for hiking and swimming.

Entrance Fee $20 pesos
