San Antonio Arrazola

arrazolaThis picturesque village, below the western slopes of Monte Alban, is internationally known for the crafting of Oaxacan wood carvings, also called Alebrijes.

This is the home of the Jimenez Family who claim to have started the images of these colorful and whimsical creatures that are so popular today.

It’s nice to visit the home studios of various families to see the actual making of these figures from Copal wood, using only machetes and small knives to carve and agave needles to paint.

There are numerous family studios to choose from depending on individual interests. Some have international recognition as they have been featured in magazines such as Smithsonian, National Geographic and Travel & Leisure.
