Santo Domingo Church

This is the most beautiful church in the city and among the nicest in the entire country. The original construction dates back to 1570 since when it has undergone various additions and renovations. The front faces west towards the sunset as it was a custom to hold high mass in the late afternoon when the sun entered through the choir window to illuminate the altar during the sacrament.

Free Entrance Open Mon to Sun from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Inside, the entire ceiling is decorated in an elegant baroque-style stucco from XVII and XVIII century works, including the beautiful Rosary Chapel. The main altar is a spectacular wooden structure bathed in gold leaf that honors Saint Dominic and his order of preachers that led the evangelization missions in most of southern Mexico.
