This is the largest city of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and home of the Juchitecas, famous for their matriarchal society and where many families make beautiful velvet blouses (huipils) on traditional flat looms. Local artisans also produce traditional indigenous clay pottery. The annual Velas are famous fiestas when the town is enlivened with oxcart processions and colorful, open air, late-night street parties.
